“DODOS FREE FALL”
Kato Takuya is a playwright and stage and film director. His scripts have won praise for their vivid depiction of the emptiness, resignation, and violence seeping through the relationships of people in their 20s and 30s, Kato’s own age group, and their adept portrait of the times. This work was staged in 2022 by Kato’s theater company Takumi, winning the 67th Kishida Drama Award.
Shinya is employed at an event production company, where he spends his days working and hanging out with comedians and famous underground players. One of his friends, Natsume, an older comedian, suddenly disappears. The story begins two years later when Shinya and Shoda, another comedian, receive a phone call from Natsume.
The pair are disturbed by Natsume’s mention of death and go in search of him. The scene then switches to before the disappearance, showing the ephemeral daily lives of Shinya and Natsume – drinking parties, part-time jobs, relationships among family and friends.
They learn that Natsume had been suffering from schizophrenia since middle school and had been hospitalized during his disappearance. Natsume tells his visitors that he was “made invisible”. As Shinya tries to help him, he comes to wonder: who made Natsume invisible?
