“Hazy Blues 2022”

The recurring society-wide traumas of various eras, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and coronavirus pandemic of 2020, are depicted in the form of a musical performance. Vocalese by various actors to the rhythm of words, sung dialogue, and thunderous music emerge from various points in the theater in a forceful mix.
At the work’s premiere in 2021, people worldwide were sharing a similar state of anxiety. The creators aimed to connect the theater in Japan with people on the other side of the earth through the media of words, music, dance, light, and video. The play was a finalist for the 66th Kishida Kunio Drama Award.
Since its founding in Tokyo in 2016, Nuthmique has been creating new musical theater through active collaboration with actors, dancers, rappers, and video artists. Its new production of Hazy Blues 2022 is said to be one of its peak achievements. (The video is from the Toyooka performance.)
