Ayano Yokoyama has a multifaceted appeal with an urban hip-hop sensibility alongside a commitment to local culture, particularly in the Nagano region. The depth of Yokoyama’s art can be fully enjoyed in this piece, which traces the origins of dance.
The dancers are positioned on stage left and the musicians on stage right. The acting area is in the center, one level lower. The music, written and performed live by SuiseiNoboAz, is in a unique style intertwining ethnic music with rock. The dynamic movement of the dancers has a synergistic effect in bringing out the details of the score.
The dancers gradually appear to be communicating with an invisible someone. This alludes to the connection between humans and invisible things like gods and ancestors prevailing through festivals since ancient times.
In the end, the large platform holding the dancers is pushed towards the musicians’ platform. The dancers stand motionless on the platform as the music plays on, creating a world where thunderous sound and silence coexist.
