“I was not born to hate…”
The voice of ancient Greece resonates in today’s world of ceaseless conflict.

MIYAGI Satoshi’s meditative production of “Antigone” overlaps the heroine’s philosophy of love beyond good and evil with the Japanese belief that we all become Buddhas after death. It is characterized by the rhythm of the percussion instruments played by the actors, the tranquil stage filled with water, and the silhouettes shimmering on the walls like shadow puppets. First performed in Cour d’honneur du Palais des papes (the Honor Court of the Palace of Popes) in Avignon as the opening play at the 2017 Festival d’Avignon, it was staged again at the Park Avenue Armory in New York in the fall of 2019. This much-discussed production was ranked in 6th place in TIME magazine’s 10 Best Theater Performances of 2019.
