“A Documentary by Mi-Mi-Bi: New Words”

The concept of “inclusive creation”, where people with and without disabilities join hands to create artistic works, is becoming more active around the world. Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of contemporary dance is its acceptance of everyone as a unique being.
Mi-Mi-Bi Dance Company, launched in 2022 at the nonprofit Dance Box theater in Kobe, treats the differences between each person without judgment. This video is a documentary showing the making of Unseen Beauty (Toyooka version) for the Toyooka Theater Festival in 2022, from the production process to the actual performance.
The globally active director Morita Kazuyo is herself a dancer with a prosthetic leg. The documentary shows, for example, wheelchair-bound performers trying in rehearsal to conquer their fears and manage downward slopes, one of numerous scenes illustrating that people with disabilities are not just weak beings who need protecting.
The title New Words is meant to help audiences gain a new understanding by recognizing others as individuals, showing how language is acquired through the body.
