“Areno”
Note: Some of the music in this video has been muted due to rights issues. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Areno, staged in 2017, was commissioned by Hirata Mitsuru, Arts and Culture Advisor at Toyohashi Arts Theatre PLAT in Aichi Prefecture. It was written and directed by Kuwabara Yuko, head of theater company KAKUTA which specializes in ensemble plays with skillful foreshadowing. She took over PLAT’s Advisor from Hirata in April 2018.
Kuboi Tetsuo, his wife Aiko and his daughter Yuki have evacuated their house from a fire at a shopping center nearby. They have asked their childhood friend Kago Michiko to let them stay for the night at her place in an old and sparsely populated public housing complex. They find that Michiko is living with an elderly, Ishikawa Hiromitsu and a young man, Kenichi.
The Kuboi family is restless due to the fear of losing their home and concerns over Michiko’s current situation. As they talk and eat together, each one’s true feelings and worries gradually emerge. Will they be able to put an end to what has been and what will be? This is an overnight fable about lonely adults, spiced up by the lyrics of the repeatedly sung “What Would You Do?” Areno is the winner of the Fifth Hayakawa Tragicomedy Award and 70th Yomiuri Literary Award for Best Drama Scenario.
This production is the 2019 revival.
