“ARIKA”

SHIMAJI Yasutake, one of the main dancers of The Forsythe Company, is a dancer who changes inexhaustibly, like lava that continues to erupt.
Rapper and musician TAMAKI ROY is at the forefront of Japanese rap, which has evolved and developed in its own unique way.
Arika is a performance between a dancer with stunning physicality, and a rapper who countershoots with words and sound. The key of this performance is to avoid any harmonious tranquility and to maintain the tension and improvisation as if they were meeting each other for the first time. What the audience wants is not friendship, but a clash between the best of different genres.
Arika is set in two square spaces connected by an aisle, and begins by with two performers passing each other. When TAMAKI raps, SHIMAJI howls like a beast from the darkness.
Sometimes they are friendly, sometimes they say “boring!” to the other, intruding on each other’s territory, which creates a thrill as their relationship gradually changes.
Little by little, they come to understand one another. The ending reverbates in a rich and wonderful way.
