“Aurelian Siblings”
This modern version of Hansel and Gretel features a brother and sister who run away from home and arrive at an odd house where mysterious phenomena occur. They try to live together but are assaulted by terrifying memories of the parents from whom they had fled. A chain of abuse becomes evident in their conversation. The audience too becomes unable to escape as it is drawn into the rapid-fire dialogue between the protagonists.
Ozawa Michinari wrote, directed, performed and designed the play. His detailed set along with the singing of Nakamura Ataru, who played the younger sister and directed the music, interweave fiction and reality to convey the suffering and difficulty of life. The play was a finalist for the 66th Kunio Kishida Drama Award.
The Epoch Man theater company was launched by Ozawa in 2013. His breezy and energetic acting style keeps audiences laughing even as he subtly probes the darkness in people’s hearts.
