“Can’t Stand Me Now”
The eldest of three sisters has an intellectual disability. Even as her younger sisters get married, leave home, and move on to the next stage of their lives, it is doubtful whether she will ever be able to stand on her own two feet. Then a man appears who wants to marry her…
“I was a kyodaiji (person with disabled sibling), having an older brother who was intellectually challenged,” says writer/director Ito Tsuyoshi. Ito is an actor with the Seinendan theater company and leader of the theater group Yashago. Having depicted people with disabilities and their families in other works, Ito turned his attention in this work to his own circumstances and focused for the first time on such kyodaiji. Five years since its first performance in 2017, it was revived by the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater in its Geigeki Eyes series of performances with young theater companies.
The play deals head on with the lives of disabled children and their kyodaiji siblings in all their joy and occasional loneliness in the form of the three sisters, who must continue to live as a family. This is an eye-opening work portraying these women and those around them with a cool and gentle touch.
