Nibroll is an artists’ collective led by YANAIHARA Mikuni. Their defining early work Coffee has shocked audiences with its seething physicality since its debut in 2002. This documentary, by dancer and Cannes-recognized director YOSHIGAI Nao, follows a 2018 restaging of Coffee combining interviews with performers and crew with excerpts from past and present performances. The insights of Mikuni herself, along with original cast members, provide a valuable picture of shifting concepts of dance and changes in creative methodology over the 16 years since the inaugural production. In a country where few pieces are restaged due to Japanese audiences’ strong preference for novelty, this film demonstrates the importance to contemporary dance of having younger generations take up the mantle of classic works while the choreographers behind them are still active.
