“Echoes of Calling”
KITAMURA Akiko’s Cross Transit Project is a collaborative project based on deep research about various Asian locations. The present work is a long-term international co-production extending from Japan and Ireland to Central Asia. The movements of Kitamura and the other six dancers are highly controlled, delicately expressive, and sharp as a knife. Their local cultures are woven into the physical language of their daily lives, but incorporating these into the medium of dance jars the viewer’s memories.
The Sean Nós (“old style”) sung by two guests is an old Irish singing style that puts emphasis on the rhythm of words over the music. The lyrics end with a mention of the Japanese god Ame no Uzume, the goddess of creation and the arts, in place of the list of Irish gods originally sung in this song. The performance extends across time and space to bring together Japanese and Irish artists, both hailing from island nations with old but still thriving cultures.
