“From Kenji Miyazawa / Yumenoshima “ground””

This performance forms the second part of “From Kenji Miyazawa / Yumenoshima”, a double bill of two works by AMEYA Norimizu and Romeo CASTELLUCCI commissioned as the opening productions for Festival/Tokyo 2011.

An admirer of MIYAZAWA Kenji ever since childhood, AMEYA here meditates on matter and life through the work of the poet and writer. The venue for the performance is Yumenoshima (literally, “island of dreams”), an artificial island in Tokyo Bay made from trash during the postwar years and period of high economic growth. On Yumenoshima is also exhibited Daigo Fukuryu Maru, a fishing ship exposed to radioactive fallout from a hydrogen bomb detonation at Bikini Atoll in 1954. As such, it is a place that forms a poignant reminder of the tragic history of nuclear weapons in Japan. Following the 2011 disaster, AMEYA’s choice of Yumenoshima as the location for the performance was very intentional: “ground” conveys the ruptures and uncertainty ushered in by the Fukushima crisis, layered with evocative images: a gamelan ensemble played by children; KUBRICK’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”; Marie Curie; and the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki.
