“Hourglass”

Available in EN/KR/簡中/繁中/JP Subtitles

This is a work-in-progress performance produced by Company Derashinera starring Lee Ren Xin (Malaysia) and Liu Juichu (Taiwan), who participated in the theatrical company’s previous work, titled Toge (performed at Kanagawa Arts Theatre [KAAT] in December 2021; see https://youtu.be/7SCoBE1OmxU), and also featuring Jung Young Doo (Korea). The completed piece was performed in Tokyo following their 10-day creation process.

Inspired by Bruno Schulz’s “Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass”, this non-verbal play creates a dreamlike vision of a fantastic world developed in the mind of the main characters, who dives deeper and deeper in their memory on their way to visit their father in a sanatorium, wandering around the boundary between dream and the reality. ONODERA Shuji’s direction skillfully depicts this realm of fantasy. It is an experimental work which aims to capture a new type of body language through international collaboration and cross-cultural exchange with cast members from other Asian countries.

“Hourglass” was produced for Japan Foundation’s International Creations in Performing Arts 2022.
