“Kuhaku ni Ochita Otoko”(A Man Fallen Into a Void)
A Man Fallen Into a Void is a unique collaboration by mime ONODERA Shuji, classical ballet dancer SHUTO Yasuyuki, and accordion artist coba, all globally active artists. It debuted in 2008 at Benisan Pit Theater, a former dye factory, where it enjoyed a successful run of 53 performances, a rare feat for this genre. It was revived at Parco Theater in 2010.
A man meets a stranger one day and is drawn into a mysterious world where he becomes lost between his life and a separate reality. The show is performed entirely in mime, but the physical expression by the five performers proves more eloquent than speech. It portrays a series of mistimings, mishappenings and misunderstandings with humor and surprise. The appearance of the space itself shape shifts with the fluid use of doors, shelves, desk and chair, turning a suspense-laden story into a drama of the absurd. It is a tour-de-force 80-minute performance.
