Contemporary circus is one of the most talked-about genres in the world of performing arts. It has expanded the means of artistic expression while maintaining a strong physicality, a contrast with the more conceptual approach of contemporary dance. While the art has not yet achieved wide recognition in Japan, Meguro Yosuke’s Nagamekurasitsu has steadily built its own unique world.
In this piece, the group does not simply show off its juggling skills by increasing the number of balls and pins. The show opens with two players nonchalantly piling up cigar boxes like building blocks rather than juggling them in the air. Items piled too high simply fall over.
The aerial hoops are not initially used for acrobatics: the players first move adeptly to avoid the rotating rings, delaying the aerial performances until later.
Meguro is not aiming for a mere competition of superior skills. He not only moves objects but examines the relationship between the bodies affected by objects and presence of those bodies on stage. He is a singular artist pursuing juggling as a composite art.
