“NOCTURNE FOR THE OLD FLOWER”
This is Kitamari’s dance version of Ota Shogo’s play of the same name. It is set in Hotel Moonlight, a brothel housing an old prostitute named Hana. Kitamari and Takechiyo Mariya together play twelve characters with distinctive personalities.
The show opens on two people floating in the darkness, their bodies tied together back to back. They dance largely as a single entity. Various thoughts overlap in Hana’s mind, such as her obligation to her regular client Yuzo, who is trying to free her from her contract with the brothel, and her foolish hope for a better life as she awaits the long-promised return of the young Madros.
The story depicts the night of a lunar eclipse. It is filled with various pairings such as light vs. shadow, man vs. woman, old vs. young, reality vs. dream, and hope vs. despair.
Madros appears, and Hana thinks misguidedly that he has finally come to get her. Yuzo attacks Madros but is slain in the attempt. That hellish last scene, depicted by just the two dancers, is terrifying.
Hope that lingers too long is poisonous. This work blurs the boundary between theater and dance.
