Since its premiere in October 1996, playwright and director NODA Hideki’s modern-day fable of prejudice and persecution “Red Demon” has been localized and performed for audiences around the world, including South Korea, Thailand, and the UK, on multiple occasions with participation from Noda himself. This version from 2020 comes from a series of performances by four teams selected via audition from students at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre’s Tokyo Theatre DoJo, a group for theatrical study founded by Noda himself. It marked the debut of this cast, and the return to public performances at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre following a temporary halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After a terrible storm, three shipwreck survivors are washed up on a beach: a woman, her slow-witted brother, and a man named Mizukane. Though rescued by local villagers, just a few days later the woman throws herself off a cliff into the ocean. And as her brother starts to explain how they came to be at sea in the first place, the story unfolds of how, some six months earlier, a red demon had washed up on the same beach, a stranger from a distant land, speaking an unfamiliar tongue. Though the woman tries to understand him, the fearful villagers seek to drive him away.
