Led by choreographer YANAIHARA Mikuni, artists’ collective Nibroll is known for its eschewal of mannered, orderly dance performance in favor of works that constantly explore the potential in marginal forms of expression. In keeping with YANAIHARA’s status as a former winner of Japan’s foremost drama award, this work employs a wealth of theatrical devices, bolstered by video projections from TAKAHASHI Keisuke and musical arrangements by SKANK, which give further shape to the play’s central concept. The title stands out for its use of the conjunction “or” as a bridge between the familiar names of Romeo and Juliet, and the production begins with performers whose outfits reject traditional gender signifiers by pairing shirts and coats not with skirts or trousers, but with shorts. This play is primarily concerned with borders––the liminal boundaries that define us and the world we inhabit. Far from being the sole preserve of Romeo and Juliet, love goes beyond such heteronormative conventions, and each of us is free to bestow our affections on Romeo or Juliet. There are no borders.
