“Ryukyu Buyo – Court Dances Bound by the Sea -”

The traditional Okinawan performing art known as Ryukyu Buyo dates back to the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and was originally a form of entertainment for foreign envoys during exchanges with China and Southeast Asia. Taking place in the ancient city of Solo, Indonesia, where traditional culture continues to thrive, this performance brings Okinawa and Java together, allowing the cultures of two royal dynasties to resonate across time and space.

In July 2025, the Mangkunegaran Palace in Solo welcomed Shinji Kinjo, Artistic Director of the National Theater Okinawa, to present a Ryukyu Buyo performance. In this 18th-century palace, the elegant classical dance of Solo and the vibrant Ryukyu Buyo, embodying the history and spirit of a royal dynasty, came together on the same stage. We invite you to experience an extraordinary performance, vividly showcasing a rich variety of Ryukyu Buyo dances in one of Indonesia’s historical palaces.

This performance was presented as part of the Japan Foundation (JF)’s “Partnership to Co-create a Future with the Next Generation: WA Project 2.0” program.
