A woman leaves her cell phone in a taxi late one night. When the taxi driver comes to return it, they have an endless conversation that gradually reveals their mutual loneliness and fears.
The play, produced by Zaidan Emoto Junko, was a finalist for the 54th Kishida Kunio Drama Award upon its debut in 2009. It wasoffered a performance for one audience member during the pandemic in 2021 on a Tokyo Bay pier at 3:00am. The audience member, Emoto herself, made an 80-minute film of the performance the show, which was shown to the media in March 2022 and shown publicly released as a live performance with the actors’ voiceovers atat Kitasenju Buoy in November of that year.
Emoto has been concentrating on experimental works such as outdoor theater in recent years. This work cannot easily be categorized as outdoor theater, a video screening or a stage performance. Each element blends together to form a moving 100-minute experience. The play offers dialogue-driven theater in the deepening talk between a man and woman against a deep blue sky turning pale at dawn. The production shows this not on the pier but in the theater, making for a challenging and sensitive piece of entertainment.
