FUKAIPRODUCE-hagoromo was established in 2004 by actress FUKAI Junko. All works are written, directed and composed by ITOI Yukinosuke. The scores match rhymed lyrics with memorable original melodies in a manner that the group playfully calls “Myosicals” – “myo” meaning strange or wondrous. This style soon attracted attention from theatergoers and has won popularity among fans of Japan’s small scale theaters.
This piece was performed in September 2020 during the Covid pandemic. To prevent infection, most of the dialogue and songs were pre-recorded, and the actors lip-synced the show. This company had won fame with its full-bodied singing and dancing on the joys and bitterness of life, so to lip-sync the entire performance was an extraordinary constraint. Ultimately, however, it served to sharpen and bring greater attention to their physical expression.
The curtain rises to reveal plastic pools lined up across the stage, in which actors sleep like embryos. From scene to scene, the show depicts various personalities such as lovers who live apart on adjoining islands, a young father and child abandoned by the mother, two sisters who enjoy eating together, a part-time plastic pool inspector, and a middle-aged man who wishes to commit double suicide with his lover. The scenes are independent stories, but all portray the loneliness of living and a resulting longing for someone at a time when the Covid pandemic has prevented human contact. It is an omnibus-style piece with 12 scenes and 12 songs.
