“Sweet Waking”
Cigare Sisters are a unit formed by SHIIBASHI Ayana and MIYABE Junko. MIYABE, who is a member of Gotandadan Theater Company led by MAEDA Shiro, and SHIIBASHI, a professional Rokyoku performer, gradually became aware of each other when people said that they looked and talked alike. They formed the Cigare Sisters after the performance of Sweet Waking in 2016. Sweet Waking is a conversation play written by MAEDA Shiro, which was first performed by Gotandadan in 2003. In this two-person play, right next to the person who has a headache, the person who wants her to stay awake keeps talking to her. She comes up with the greeting, “Oyasumanasai” which literally means, “Good night, but don’t fall asleep”. MAEDA wrote this piece so that the two characters can be played by actors of various of age, gender, and relationships. After the performance in Shinjuku, Tokyo, the Cigare Sisters’ performance of this piece has been staged in Kyoto, Moscow, and other cities.
