“The Cherry Orchard”

Available in EN/FR/JP Subtitles

“The Cherry Orchard,” Chekov’s masterpiece admired by spectators worldwide since its creation, is reconceptualized as a bilingual play performed in French and Japanese. This new interpretation of work is a collaboration between SPAC(Shizuoka Performing Arts Center)and the French National Dramatic Center, Gennevilliers Theater. All actors were carefully selected by the French director, Daniel Jeanneteau.
In this performance, Jeanneteau depicts characters desperately trying to overcome a series of tragic situations lying in front of them, mirroring our struggles with the changes brought on by the COVID pandemic and the global natural disasters. He aims to convey a desire to move forward without losing hope. Also, the bilingual conversations of the characters at the main character’s mansion represent their “inability to understand each other” while showing that some forms of “understanding” can transcend language barriers. Enjoy the new form of Chekovian play made possible through collaboration of artists from different cultural background, combined with Chekov’s original text filled with subtle humor.

“The Cherry Orchard” was produced for Japan Foundation’s International Creations in Performing Arts 2021.
