“The Radiant City”

Available in TR/EN/JP Subtitles
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Turkey, playwright and director Yoko Oike, who leads the theater company “Usagi Stripe,” and Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, co-produced “The Radiant City” with the students and faculty members of the university’s Theater Department. The play had originally premiered as an Usagi Stripe production in 2022.

The Radiant City is a story about loneliness in a city. In the play, there are characters referred to as “aliens” who struggle to be understood by others. However, even among Earthlings, it is difficult for individuals to understand each other, and modern people probably live with a sense of loneliness. These characters, who still desire to connect with one another, were brought to life in this play by theatre students in Turkey, which has a cultural background distinct from Japan.
