“THE SUN”

“The Sun” is an SF drama set in the near future depicting a world where the population has plunged due to a virus spread by bioterrorism. Some years after the resulting political and economic turmoil and destruction of the social infrastructure, we find that some of the infected people have miraculously recovered. This new breed of people, known as the Nocs (nocturnal people), cannot live in the sun but have developed an immunity and metabolism superior to humans. The process of mutation into Nocs has been analyzed, and their expanding population has become the target of oppression. Nevertheless, the conversion into Nocs becomes unstoppable among youths because the suitability for mutation is lost around the age of 30.
Forty years since their emergence, autonomous communities of Nocs are scattered throughout the archipelago that was once called Japan. They have formed a loosely connected federation.
The murder of Nocs in one village in the past led to economic sanctions from adjacent Nocs communities. The ten-year blockade has now come to an end, and trade with Nocs resumes. With the lifting of sanctions, young people in the village are offered the chance to mutate and live as Nocs but…?
The SF setting virtually anticipates the transformation and divisions of society after the pandemic. The drama is a keen examination of the nature of human life.
Premiered in 2011, this production is the 2016 revival.
