“Three phases for a dancer to carry a bubble gum (preparation, transportation, removing)”

This piece, choreographed and directed by TSUKAHARA Yuya of Contact Gonzo, is part of a triple bill created by three choreographers for dancer TERADA Misako. A stepladder, wood, monitors and other items are brought onto an empty stage. Terada walks across boards laid across a stack of step boxes while chewing gum. Daily goods are carried along a small conveyor belt in the corner. They are shown in a projection falling into a metal basin, the sound of the drop reverberating in the silent space. There is virtually no dance-like movement in the general sense, making us reflect on the fundamentals of the performing arts, i.e., what is it that people see on a stage.
Do we see the body of the dancer carrying the gum by chewing it, as literally stated in the title? Do we watch the movement as the dancer carefully crosses over the boards? Do we see the entirety of the theatrical space, including the performer’s body and stage scenery? Perhaps it is all of these. Audiences are made aware that they are looking at the body, movement and space in turn, constantly shifting their focus.
