Tokyo Note was written and directed by HIRATA Oriza and first performed by Seinendan in 1994. It won the 39th KISHIDA Kunio Drama Award and has become HIRATA’s signature piece. Set in a museum in the near future, the work depicts the gradual collapse of family and human relationships in modern society.
Tokyo Note has been translated into 13 languages and performed around the world. Since 2016, it has been adapted, translated, performed as Taipei Note, Bangkok Note, and Manila Note in those respective cities. The International Version is a culmination of this piece, performed as an international collaboration with actors from Japan, South Korea, the US, and Uzbekistan. In the international version, Tokyo in the near future has suffered from its transformation into an international city.
Seinendan was founded by HIRATA Oriza in 1982 and is based in Komaba Agora Theater. It pursues a theatrical style embodying HIRATA’s modern colloquial theatrical theory and has been keen in fostering young artists. Ebara Riverside Theater was established in 2020 as a new base in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture for the creation and dissemination of new work.
