Conceived by director and lighting designer Fujimoto Takayuki, True brings together leading artists from various fields, including performance, media art, and music. It remains an innovative work offering striking discoveries more than a decade since its premiere.
The drama is a lesson in experience as a perilously innocent being is guided through the world by a mature shadowy figure. The electrical currents that run from their brains to their muscles are converted into light and sounds by myoelectric sensors, causing the entire space to tremble. The scaffolding on both sides of the stage vibrates, and the LED screens on the ceiling flash rapidly, dynamically disrupting the audience’s perception and sense of reality. At the same time, even the smallest gesture – the tapping of a glass, the gentle placement of a foot – creates a momentary tension that brushes across the nerves.
Invisible electrical signals resonate across the boundaries between human and non-human. Technology and bodies come to breathe together like a single organism. What is being questioned is the very contours of reality that we believe exists as is.
